Origin leading the way with breastfeeding friendly workplaces

In a first for the energy industry, Origin is setting the standard for Breastfeeding Friendly Workplaces (BFW) with the addition of dedicated breastfeeding facilities at its remote operating sites and regional offices.

Origin CEO Frank Calabria said, “Expanding dedicated breastfeeding facilities from Origin’s metropolitan offices to regional offices and sites was critical in supporting working parents, in particular breastfeeding mothers, and creating a family-friendly workplace.

“This is a very practical example of how we’re removing barriers for parents returning to work and improving the diversity of our workforce.”

STRIKING THE RIGHT WORK / FAMILY BALANCE

For Senior Field Advisor Anje Schimpf, whose role involves travel to rural and remote locations in Queensland, the move has reaffirmed Origin as a progressive and flexible company.

Working two weeks on / two weeks off also means 12 hour days for Anje when she is on shift. When it came time to take maternity leave, Anje felt supported with the provision of parental leave and was also able to take leave later in her pregnancy when it was no longer physically possible to undertake fieldwork.

After welcoming her son Vincent, Anje’s focus with her return to work is around achieving work/family balance. “Origin actively promotes and supports a work/life balance for its people with a range of options available including flexible working hours, working from home, part-time work options, different varieties of paid and unpaid leave and volunteer programs,” said Anje.

Creating a family friendly workplace

Executive General Manager, People & Culture, Sharon Ridgway said for Origin, being breastfeeding-friendly and providing these facilities gives women greater choice about when, where and how they work as they progress their career and balance family commitments.

“We have a proactive Working Parents Program to manage the transition to parental leave, maintaining contact with our employees while they are on leave and subsequently managing their return to work. Part of this program includes the establishment of dedicated breastfeeding facilities in remote sites. This has been recognised by the Australian Breastfeeding Association as a leading practice in our sector.

“In support of greater diversity in our workplace, we’ve also created a culture shift around flexibility with the deployment of our ‘Roles Flex for All’ initiative this year. The objective was to lift performance and engagement, to remove the stigma people feel around asking for flexibility and create greater flexibility for employees working in roles deemed ‘hard to flex’ due to shift rosters or remote locations. This is a leading practice in our sector, being the first Oil and Gas organisation to flex FIFO (Fly In Fly Out) roles and to enable flexibility in remote field-based rostered environments,” said Sharon.
